USDT exists as different assets on different networks; choosing the wrong network will result in lost funds. This article compares the various networks. 1. Network Comparison
| Network | Fee | Speed | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRC20 (Tron) | < 1 USDT | 1-3 minutes | Mainland P2P / Wallet-to-wallet |
| ERC20 (Ethereum) | 5-30 USDT | 5-15 minutes | Transfers from exchanges / DeFi |
| BEP20 (BNB Chain) | < 0.5 USDT | < 30 seconds | Within the Binance ecosystem |
| Solana | < 0.1 USDT | < 10 seconds | Solana ecosystem |
| Polygon | < 0.5 USDT | < 1 minute | Polygon ecosystem |
2. The Most Important Rule
Always select the same network for both depositing and withdrawing.
If you withdraw USDT-TRC20 from OKX, your Binance deposit address must also be TRC20. If you select the wrong network:
- The assets will arrive at the wrong address (an address on a network where you don't have a Binance account).
- The funds will likely be lost.
- Recovery requires contacting customer support for a special procedure, and some networks do not support recovery.
Before every deposit, take a screenshot to verify the address prefix and the selected network.
3. TRC20 Details
Advantages
- Extremely low fees (network subsidy for USDT).
- Fast transaction speed.
- Used by almost all mainland P2P merchants.
Things to Note
- The address starts with a 'T' (34 characters).
- You cannot transfer from an ERC20 network to a TRC20 address (the networks are not interconnected).
- Some wallets have restrictions on TRC20.
4. ERC20 Details
Advantages
- The widest compatibility (supported by all wallets).
- Highly relied upon by DeFi protocols.
Things to Note
- Fees depend on ETH gas prices; they can exceed 30 USDT during peak times.
- Slower transaction speed.
- Suitable for large transactions (where the fee represents a small percentage).
5. BEP20 Details
Advantages
- Heavily promoted by Binance.
- Extremely low fees.
- Extremely fast transaction speed.
Things to Note
- Primarily used within the Binance ecosystem.
- May not be supported if transferring to external exchanges.
- It is different from BEP2 (which has been deprecated).
6. Solana / Polygon
Solana
- Extremely fast and cheap.
- The first choice for users in the Solana ecosystem.
- Pay attention to the address format (it is completely different from EVM).
Polygon
- An L2 solution.
- Suitable for Polygon DApp users.
- Smaller Chinese-speaking community presence.
7. Emergency Steps for Choosing the Wrong Network
Scenario A: Withdrawing from Binance to an external address using the wrong network
- Check if you control the target address on that network.
- If you can control it → wait for block confirmation and import it into the corresponding network's wallet.
- If you cannot control it → the assets are lost, but you can try contacting Binance support for a "recovery" procedure.
Scenario B: Depositing from an external source to Binance using the wrong network
- If the network is supported by Binance (e.g., sent to a TRC20 address but using the BEP20 network) → Support can help recover it, but a fee is required.
- If the network is not supported by Binance → It is extremely difficult to recover.
Scenario C: Sending to a completely wrong address
- This is irreversible. The assets are lost.
8. Security Recommendations
1. Use the Withdrawal Address Whitelist
Only add addresses you trust to the whitelist. When withdrawing, you can only select an address from the whitelist, preventing misoperations.
2. Test Small Amounts Before Large Transfers
When transferring to a new address for the first time, send 10 USDT as a test. Once it arrives, proceed with the larger amount.
3. Verify on Blockchain Explorers
After depositing, use Tronscan / Etherscan / BscScan to check the TXID and see if it has arrived.
4. Be Alert to Anti-Phishing Address Replacement
Some malware will replace the address in your clipboard. After copying and pasting the address, verify the first 6 and last 6 characters word by word.
FAQ
Q1: How are fees calculated? Binance automatically adjusts fees based on the on-chain gas. The exact figure is displayed during each withdrawal.
Q2: How long do on-chain confirmations take? TRC20 takes 19 blocks (about 1 minute); ERC20 takes 12 blocks (about 3 minutes); BEP20 takes 15 blocks (about 30 seconds).
Q3: Can I cross-chain directly? USDT cannot switch networks directly. You have to withdraw from Binance to an external network, then deposit it back using another network.
Q4: I selected TRC20 but didn't receive it in my external wallet? Check the TXID status on Tronscan. If it is confirmed but the wallet doesn't show it, it is a wallet synchronization issue — refresh or re-import the wallet.
